Golden dimmed lights glow over the black tablecloth, highlighting the small white plate with sugary cake slices. Contessa picked at the corner of the carrot cake. She frowned, glancing between the carrot stuffed cake and the simple vanilla bean option.

“What are your thoughts?” the wedding planner asked, opening her notebook, ready to jot down the request.

“I just can’t say,” she said, “They’re both delicious.”

“Then picking should be easy,” the planner winked.

Contessa giggled. Her eyes glanced over the restaurant. She stood, clasping her hands together as a big smile stretched across her face. She bounced on her toes like a giddy schoolgirl.

“Daddy!” she squealed.

“Babygirl.” Her father, Senator Johnathan Newmore, placed a kiss on her forehead, “Is that the wedding glow, princess?”

She gushed, swatting his chest. “Perhaps. The wedding and the twenty-four karat gold facials.”

Jonathan raised a brow, taking a seat, “Twenty-four karat gold facials? Wow. I’m disappointed you haven’t taken me.”

“Oh,” she reassured him, “I have an appointment booked for Saturday. We’re getting facials, massages, pedicures… the whole caboodle! Me, you, and Mommy.”

“Sweetie, I’ve got that press conference with Mayor Kimber.” He tugged his ear. His honey brown eyes glazed over the hardly touched cake slices.

“Not to worry. I cleared everything with Mom. She’ll iron out the details.”

Johnathan nodded in agreement.

His passive nature and lighthearted personality blended well with his wife and daughters’ abundantly excitable personalities. He smiled at his only child as she continued the conversation. Contessa told her father about her wedding planning woes as they tasted samples of iced cake.

He tucked the white cloth over the rim of his collar, listening to his daughter with intention.

“Wait, baby, say that again.”

Contessa sipped a glass of champagne, “Kenise coordinates the daily agenda for the women’s shelter, and I oversee the events. In fact, we have something in the works. It’ll be a family day for the women and children.”

“Kenise Shepard?” Jonathan confirmed as the wedding planner swapped the vanilla-flavored cake with a tripled layered chocolate slice.

“Yes. Miss Shepard. She’s a little jaded, but nice overall.”

Jonathan sighed, nibbling at his short nails.

“Okay, cough it up.” Contessa rolled her eyes

“What?” Jonathan shrugged, “I said nothing. You’re an adult.”

“Just go and say it, Dad. I can tell when you’re lying to me.”

Releasing his breath, he bit the cake, “I read the court files between Devon and Kenise. Well, I read everything that wasn't redacted from the record.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means that she made very dangerous accusations, and the Kimber family did a political clean up. It means that I don’t trust Devon, princess. And if something happens to you, I’ll never forgive myself.”

“Oh, Dad. Please. Don’t worry, I trust him. He’s perfect,” she promised

“If that’s the case, then why is he late?”

The ivory detailed elevator doors slid open. The aromatic fragrance of fresh flowers submerged his senses as Devon breezed into the room.

His black shirt with white pinstripes covered his tall and fit form perfectly. Contessa stood from her seat quickly, along with her father.

She brushed the crumbs from her burgundy dress and fidgeted with her pearl necklace.
